Commonwealth Games 800m Gold medallist Mary Moraa trains at MISC, Kasarani on June 6, 2023 ahead of the National Police Service Athletics Championships that will be held at the same venue today and tommorow.
Assistant Inspector General of Police William Yiampoy, a former Africa 800m champion and the 2001 world 10,000m champion Chief Inspector of Police Charles Kamathi are some of former athletes who have risen in the ranks at the police force.
Yiampoy is the current head of the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU). Others are the Chief Inspector of Police Richard Mateelong, the 2008 Beijing Olympics 3,000m steeplechase bronze medallist and 2010 Commonwealth Games 3,000m steeplechase champion.
They have rocked the world of athletics from the Olympic Games, World Athletics Championships, Commonwealth Games, and African Games to the Diamond League series.
In fact, half of Team Kenya athletics members are made of the country’s gallant policemen and women.
