After Leopards, lowly ‘BB Bread’ add Gor to list of their victims

After eliminating giants AFC Leopards from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Cup at the round of 64 stage, underdogs BB Bread Football Club struck again on Sunday, March 8, 2026, stunning record champions Gor Mahia in the round of 32 of the competition.
An 84th-minute goal by substitute Dennis Muthini was all the FKF Nairobi East County Branch team needed to upset the nine-time FKF Cup champions Gor on Sunday in the match played at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. Following the historic victory, BB Bread clinched a berth in the round of 16 of the competition, which is the qualifier tournament of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Other teams which qualified for the round of 16 of the domestic cup are FKF-Premier League side Tusker, KCB, Shabana, Kenya Police, Ulinzi Stars, Bandari, Kariobangi Sharks, Kakamega Homeboyz, Nairobi United, Murang’a Seal, and Posta Rangers.

The rest are National Super League side 3K Football Club, and lower-tier sides Kuta Collections, Mfalme FC and Chabaiywa Lions.
Gor is the only FKF-PL side which was eliminated by a lower-tier league side in the round of 32. The defeat is a major blow to the record champions, who had vowed to win both the FKF-PL title and the FKF Cup. Gor last won the FKF Cup in 2021.
For BB Bread, their progress to the round of 16 stage is a promise fulfilled. After upsetting Leopards in the round of 64 stage, the team vowed to repeat the feat against Gor.
BB Bread edged out Leopards 4-3 in post-match penalties after the two teams had battled to a 2-2 in regular time in the round of 64 on February 8.
“Sports-wise, it (facing Gor) is a good challenge for my boys. It (the victory) is another reason for them (BB Bread players) to be accountable so that we can at least pull off another surprise,” BB’s Team Liaison officer, William Gitonga, had said after the round of 32 draw on February 19.

After the painful elimination from the competition by underdogs BB Bread yesterday, a section of Gor supporters attempted to attack the club’s coach, Charles Akonnor.
Yesterday, holders Nairobi United registered the biggest win of the day, hammering BMC AllStars 8-0 at Ulinzi Complex. On Saturday, Ulinzi Stars dismantled Zoo FC 7-0 at the same venue. FKF Cup is known as the Mozzart Bet Cup for sponsorship reasons.
