AFC Leopards’ coach Fred Ambani Wednesday praised his players for their composed play, impressive ball-passing skills, and high confidence during their 4-1 victory over Tusker in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League match held at Dandora Stadium, Nairobi.
The win marked a significant turnaround for the Big Cats, who ended a five-match winless streak against Tusker, a team they last defeated on September 26, 2021. Goals came in abundance, with Ovella Ochieng', Sydney Lokale, Victor Omune, and Boniface Munyendo each finding the net for Leopards.
Tusker’s lone goal came courtesy of Boban Ziruntusa, who joined the Brewers from Mtibwa Sugar in the Tanzanian Premier League during the last transfer window.
Ambani, a former Harambee Stars player, said, “The best thing I drew from that game was the composure and passes. This was the best game we have played this season, and the goals came as a result of the collective effort amongst my players.”
Ambani expressed his satisfaction with Ovella’s performance, noting, “We are now scoring goals, and I’m happy with the way Ovella is playing since he also scored for us in the midweek. With this rhythm and teamwork, I’m optimistic the best is coming for us this season.”
The victory propelled Leopards to fifth place in the league standings, tied on 18 points with fourth-placed Gor Mahia, who have a better goal difference.
Meanwhile, in Machakos, Gor Mahia were left frustrated after a last-minute free kick by Mathew Tegisi secured a 1-1 draw for Shabana.
The Green Army’s disappointment was compounded when Eric Morrisson was red-carded for a foul that led to the crucial free kick. This draw leaves Gor Mahia with mounting concerns as they ponder their next steps to improve their season.
The draw kept Shabana in eighth place with 17 points from 13 matches.
