What you need to know:

  • The match descended into chaos as police had to use teargas to control unruly Gor Mahia fans, who attacked center referee Stephen Orimba, accusing him of bias. Both Gor Mahia’s head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno and Tusker’s Charles Okere, along with players, ran for cover in the dressing rooms as the teargas cloud engulfed the stadium.

Tusker FC striker Ryan Ogam netted his 15th goal of the season on Sunday as the brewers triumphed 2-1 over defending champions Gor Mahia in a dramatic Football Kenya Federation Premier League match at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.

The match descended into chaos as police had to use teargas to control unruly Gor Mahia fans, who attacked center referee Stephen Orimba, accusing him of bias. Both Gor Mahia’s head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno and Tusker’s Charles Okere, along with players, ran for cover in the dressing rooms as the teargas cloud engulfed the stadium.

Otieno was the target of the irate fans, with some voicing concerns about his tactics and expressing that they would not “allow him to sink the club” due to poor results.

Despite the uproar, Gor Mahia management has backed Otieno to lead the team for the remainder of the season after the sacking of Brazilian coach Leonardo Neiva on November 13 last year, due to a series of disappointing results and instances of hooliganism.

The match was marred by controversy in the dying moments. In the second minute of added time, Tusker was awarded a free kick after a foul outside the box, which was converted by Dennis ‘Decha’ Wanjala to give Tusker a 2-1 lead. Gor Mahia players and fans were infuriated, claiming that the goal was scored while Tusker players were in an offside position.

The Brewers had taken the lead in the 50th minute when substitute Dennis Ogutu intercepted a ball in midfield and set up Ogam, who easily finished past Kevin Omondi. Gor Mahia responded in the 69th minute, with Austin Odhiambo scoring a stunning solo effort to level the scores.

Ogam, 22, is now just five goals shy of of last season’s top scorer Benson Omala's tally. The former K'Ogalo man now plays for Al Safa in Lebanon With 17 matches still to play, Ogam could very well surpass Omala’s tally as he continues his strong form.

The win moved Tusker to 33 points from 17 matches, further solidifying their position at the top of the FKF Premier League table. Gor Mahia remains in fourth with 24 points from 14 matches.

In other Sunday fixtures, Kenya Police continued their impressive run, securing a 1-0 win over Murang’a Seal at SportPesa Arena in Murang’a County.

Forward Clinton Kinanga scored the only goal of the match in the second half, maintaining Kenya Police’s unbeaten streak under Burundian coach Ettienne Ndayarigije, who has overseen eight consecutive league matches without defeat since his appointment in November 2024.

Kenya Police are now second in the standings with 30 points from 16 matches, with a game in hand.

KCB failed to climb to the top after being held to a 1-1 draw by Nairobi City Stars at Kenyatta Stadium. A fifth-minute own goal by KCB’s Francis Oduor gave City Stars the lead, but KCB equalized in the 22nd minute through Philemon Nyakwaka.

In Mombasa, Bandari FC was held to a 1-1 draw by Shabana. Shabana’s Brian Michira opened the scoring in the first half, but Bandari’s Joseph Otieno equalized after the break.

Sofapaka secured a 2-1 win over bottom-placed Posta Rangers at Dandora Stadium, moving up to fifth place in the standings.
