  • "We can confirm that we have mutually parted ways with head coach Andreas Spiers. His contract ended and we are now in the market for a new coach. We wish him well, said a statement from the Football Kenya Federation Premier League club.

Record Kenyan football champions, Gor Mahia seem to have become a revolving door for coaches after the club Tuesday parted ways with its fifth coach in a span of one year.

The 19-time Kenyan champions parted ways with German head coach Andreas Spier after his six-month contract with the club lapsed.

Since January 2020, Gor Mahia have hired and released coaches Portuguese Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto, former Kenyan international Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo, Briton Mark Harrison, Ugandan Paul Nkata and Spier from Germany to guide them in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

Since 2013, the Kenyan giants have had 10 coaches which translates to one coach per season.

Commenting on Spier’s exit, Gor Mahia’s Secretary General, Sam Ochola, confirmed to Nation Sport that the club has opted not to retain him based on his performance during his time at the club.

However, Ochola explained that the management has reached an agreement to extend the contract of the club’s assistant coach Michael Nam who will be in charge of the team as they source for a new coach.

Nam and Spier joined the club on February 1.

“I can confirm that we have parted ways with Spier. We haven’t sacked him but we have opted not to renew his contract which has expired. Michael Nam will be in charge as we look for a foreign coach,” said Ochola.

Spier was appointed a day after the club opted not to hand the mantle to Ugandan tactician Paul Nkata, who currently coaches National Super League side Muhoroni Youth.

Spier led the club to a third place finish on 54 points, nine below eventual winners Tusker.

This was the second season Gor missed out on the league title which they had won for the past four consecutive seasons.

Spier, 59 also led the club to the Madaraka Cup glory after edging out perennial rivals AFC Leopards in a penalties shootout on June 1.

The German had previously coached Rwanda women’s national team and APR in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

He also served as FKF’s technical instructor in 2013. Spier, who is still in the country, was unavailable to comment on his exit from Gor Mahia. His calls went unanswered.
