Nairobi Royal Golf Club welcomes Africa's first Giving Machines initiative
Nairobi has become the first African city to host the Light The World Giving Machines event, a charitable initiative through sports sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The machines were introduced over the weekend, at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club in a Red Cross Golf Tournament which was won by Crispine Mudhune and Angela Kairu in men and women categories respectively.
The Giving Machines, designed as large red vending machines, allow individuals to donate, then distributed by local non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The machines will be stationed at Sarit in Nairobi, starting November 30, 2024, through to January 1, 2025.
In his address at the launch, Deputy Secretary General in charge of programs for the Red Cross, Joe Mbalu, emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative, noting that it offers an easy and engaging way for people to contribute to critical causes.
“This is a brilliant opportunity to serve the vulnerable in our society,” Mbalu said, adding that the Red Cross is committed to supporting efforts that uplift communities.
George Munene, representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, highlighted the spirit of giving that the machines encapsulate.
“The Giving Machines are an embodiment of love in action, bringing people together to help those in need in a fun and memorable way,” Munene stated.
The Giving Machines initiative, which has been successful in 61 cities worldwide, will now expand to 108 cities in 2024.
Nairobi’s inclusion in this global effort marks a significant milestone, enabling Kenyans to participate in an impactful, innovative way of giving back to the community.
