Nyali golfer Balala labours long and hard for Kenya Open Championship slot

Nyali Golf and Country Club player, Adel Balala, went toe to toe with some of the finest local golfers over four days at Limuru Country Club to become only the second amateur player to qualify for 2027 Magical Kenya Open Golf Championship, after winning Kenya Amateur Match Play Championship.
On Sunday, it was sweet victory for Balala, who lost the Kenya Amateur Stroke Play title to Muthaiga’s Jay Sandhu in a three-hole play-off at Royal Nairobi Golf Club just a week ago.
This time round, Balala was swift and clinical, sweeping aside Sandhu at the semi-final stage. He then faced a younger and more youthful opponent in 15-year-old Maahir Patel of Sigona, who nonetheless, stretched him to the limit till at the 34th hole where he triumphed to win the 105th edition of Kenya Amateur Match Play Championship at Limuru Country Club.
Early this year, the 28-year-old Balala qualified to play in the 2026 Magical Open Championship after emerging top among Kenyan players in Africa Amateur Championship held in South Africa, but he opted to travel to Mecca for the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Now he has a second chance to compete in the 2027 Magical Kenya Open Championship which will be held at Karen Country Club.
Balala, who started competing in amateur events at the age of 13, failed to qualify for 2025 Kenya Open Championships after finishing 10th in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series Order of Merit.
Balala’s journey to victory started on Thursday when took on a large field in the first round of the competition held as stroke play. He finished among the top 32 and qualified for the matchplay format held on Friday.
High quality competition
On Sunday, Balala took an early lead against Patel and stayed at the top of things, but Patel drew level. Balala regained the lead led by a hole until at the 33rd and 34th holes when he surged ahead to win 3-2.
“Its been a long week and a real test of endurance for me, playing 125 holes over four days is not easy, but I enjoyed every moment of the challenge. I came into this championship determined to make up for my narrow loss in NCBA Kenya Amateur Stoke Play Championship last weekend at Royal. I am happy that everything fell in place. Winning the match play title and earning a place in Magical Kenya Open makes all the hard work worthwhile,’’ Balala observed after his triumph at Limuru Country Club on Sunday.
Before coming face to face with Patel, Balala had beaten newly crowned Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Champion Sandhu by two holes in the semi finals. For his part, Patel beat Austrian golfer Ewan Widor by a hole to reach the final.
Way before that, Balala had eliminated South Africa’s Pranay Kapur 3-2 in the quarter finals, as Patel beat his club-mate Junaid Manji at the 21st hole. In the round of 16, Balala knocked out Golf Park’s Etaan Sylvester, while Patel had a one-hole victory over Akshay Chandaria.
Speaking at Limuru Country Club after the championship, Kenya Golf Union chairman, Brian Akun said the competition witnessed high quality game throughout.
“Over the past few days, we have witnessed outstanding golf and fiercely-contested matches, with our players displaying great skill, determination, and sportsmanship. The high standard of play throughout the championship reflects the continued growth and bright future of amateur golf in Kenya,” he said.
