KCB on the cusp of winning National Sevens Circuit title
Mwamba women Rugby players celebrate lifting the Stephanie Rose Trophy during Sportpesa Kabeberi 7s Rugby Circuit on September 7, 2025, played at RFUEA ground.
KCB rugby team is on the cusp of winning the 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit.
On Sunday, KCB took a step closer to recapturing the series title, weathering a second-half storm from Daystar University Falcons to win 20-10 and retain the Kabeberi Sevens title at RFUEA grounds in Nairobi.
KCB will have Falcons to thank for clearing the way for them in the race for the series title, at least for now, as teams head to Dala Sevens, the final leg of the circuit this weekend in Kisumu.
On Sunday, Falcons stunned Strathmore Leos 12-10 in the semi-finals of Kabeberi Sevens, spoiling the team’s chances of staying on level terms with KCB in the chase for this year’s national title.
This was after the series defending champions, Kenya Harlequin, fell by the wayside in Kabeberi Sevens.
KCB beat Kabras Sugar 21-17 in the other Cup semi-final match to qualify for the final.
Kabras Sugar beat Leos 24-12 in the play-off for third place.
KCB, who have reached the final in all five legs of the series so far, lead the standings with 104 points after collecting 22fom Kabeberi Sevens to open a nine-point lead over Strathmore Leos, who are second.
Strathmore Leos, who collected 15 points for finishing fourth at Kabeberi Sevens, are second with 95 points.
KCB, who also won Driftwood Sevens and Christie Sevens titles, lost to Strathmore Leos in Prinsloo and Embu Sevens, only need a main Cup quarter-final appearance at Dala Sevens to recapture the title they won last in 2023.
On the other hand, Strathmore Leos must go all the way and win Dala Sevens title if they are to claim the National Sevens Series title and even then, they must hope that KCB doesn’t reach the main Cup quarter-finals to spoin their party.
“Dayster University did all the work against us in the race for the title and I feel for them, having played so well,” said KCB’s acting head coach Andrew Amonde.
“They played their hearts out and it’s good to see such youngsters perform on the big stage.”
Amonde said KCB have worked hard for the title, reaching the final of five events in the series, winning three and losing two.
“ We have a bunch of dedicated boys and our biggest supporter has been our sponsors KCB Bank,” Amonde said.
Strathmore Leos deputy coach, Charles Cardovillis, said his team made things difficult for themselves against KCB in the title chase after losing their semi-final match to Daystar.
“We must now wait to see if KCB falters at some stage but again, we needed to win and reach the final to make the final leg in Dala interesting. We simply didn’t turn up against Daystar,” said Cardovillis.
