The Council of Governors (CoG) has termed the police decision to "single out" Nairobi County boss Johnson Sakaja for arrest over snubbing Senate summons as unfair.

CoG chair Ahmed Abdullahi said concerns raised over extortion claims touching on members of the County Public Accounts Committee, which issued the arrest order, are yet to be addressed.

He then demanded that arrest warrants issued on 29 governors be retracted until the extortion claims are addressed.

"When 43 out of 47 governors raise matters with respect to extortion, harassment, intimidation and embarrassment at Senate committees, it's not a matter to be taken lightly. If we were not conscious of protecting the integrity of that House, we would have played out our evidence in the public court. But we're not here to kill each other's institutions," he said.

"We kept being reminded that Senate has the powers of a High court judge when summoning. Have you ever seen a judge behave the way some of these senators behave? If you want to be given the respect of a judge you must behave the way they behave in court."
