Caroline Mutoko: Edward Carey Kwach played by his own rules

To many, he was Kwach — a voice that stirred conversations, a presence that lit up both radio and television, a man who defined his own path in Kenya’s media landscape.

But to me, he was Carey. That was the name his mother called him. The name we used as family. The name that holds stories that never made the headlines — stories of a man who was bold, brilliant, deeply loving, and, above all, authentic.

I knew Carey before the spotlight, before the accolades. I knew the man who lived fully and fiercely in every moment. He broke the mold and rewrote the script — not just in media, but in life.

Carey played by his own rules, and when they no longer served him, he changed them — unapologetically.

Everything he did, he did his way. Whether behind the mic, reading the news, debating on air, or simply sharing a moment over a cup of coffee — Carey gave it his all. That was his magic.

And while the airwaves may fall silent, and the sets dim a little in his absence, those of us who knew him — really knew him — carry the fullness of his spirit in our hearts.

So go well, Carey. I know when our time comes, you’ll be there — leading the welcome committee, probably in a sharply tailored jacket, with that signature grin and unmatched flair. Because that’s the Carey way.

Rest well. Till we meet again.
