Ramadhan at the workplace

When we talk about diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace, we cannot shy away from spirituality—an often ignored aspect of diversity.
We are in the holy month of Ramadhan. It is observed by all Muslims worldwide through spiritual reflection, fasting and increased dedication to prayers. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and an important undertaking for Muslims. But how often do organisations make efforts to ensure that Muslim employees, often a minority, balance their work and their spiritual obligations?
For employees observing Ramadhan, it tends to be a challenging month. This is especially so for employees with manual roles or those who have to work long hours. It is, therefore, important that human resource (HR) professionals ensure that Muslim employees get adequate support during Ramadhan.
But HRs can only undertake such roles effectively if they themselves are conversant with the traditions and customs. As such, they need to invest some time researching on the Islamic culture, spend time with employees to know how the organisation can support them and search online forums on how to best support Muslim employees during the period.
HR should ask employees if they have any special request and try to accommodate them with grace and discretion. Announcing Ramadhan through an internal memo to all employees shows appreciation of the Holy Month and informs other employees so that they can offer necessary support to fasting colleagues.
While a healthy work-life balance is important to all employees, it is critical during Ramadhan since it comes with drop in energy levels and difficulty in maintaining productivity. It is, therefore, important to inform supervisors to avoid setting multiple meetings to avert heavy workloads for fasting employees.
When Muslims end Ramadhan, they invite all to celebrate. To reciprocate, let us support them during the Holy Month.
