Preventable • The 42 deaths caused by floods are deeply saddening and a stark reminder of the urgent need for disaster preparedness, says Yabesh Onwong’a.
“While the relief efforts are commendable, this tragedy highlights the importance of proper planning and community awareness to prevent such disasters. The towns, especially Nairobi, have inadequate drainage that should be enhanced.”
Traffic offenders • Now that NTSA has rolled out instant fines with smart cameras, will they also rein in the drivers of government vehicles? asks Sam Muthamia.
“Many are notorious for using the wrong side of the road or dangerously overlapping? What of boda boda, who routinely flout traffic rules? And the road safety measures? Or is this another revenue-raising measure?”
Speed limits • The introduction of speed limits on some chosen routes is an excellent move by the NTSA, says Ian Mgenyi.
He is, however, not happy about effecting this on the Nairobi Expressway as well.
“This is meant to take the shortest time possible after paying a toll for the privilege. The fines beat the purpose. The expressway should be exempted from this.”
Power woes • The prolonged low voltage and frequent power blackouts in parts of Komarock Estate, Nairobi are quite frustrating, says Philip Nyasio.
“I wish to formally register my disappointment over these persistent power problems. This disruption causes significant inconvenience and poses potential danger to household electrical appliances.”
Too silent • While electric vehicles are undoubtedly the future of the motor industry, Joseph Macharia is a bit disturbed by their silence.
Says he: “Though there’s a rapid rise in their use, the EVs should be fitted with some sort of sound when the engine is running, to alert those nearby that they are coming. They are very quiet even at top speed.”
