Address gambling addiction among Kenyans
Some Gen Zs have taken up gambling as a form of investment.
Gambling • The alarming increase in betting addiction is driving some people to commit suicide after losing money, says F. Mukembu. “The most worrying thing is that it doesn’t spare any gender, and many of those affected are suffering from addiction in silence after incurring huge losses in online betting. It’s high time the issue was addressed seriously by the authorities.” His contact is [email protected].

Patriotism • The national flag, once the preserve of the president and Cabinet ministers since independence in 1963, is being used by the Gen Z to display patriotism, says Dr Kennedy Miyoro Mochabo. He’s grateful to Weekly Review columnist John Kamau for educating the people on the making of the flag. “It was a captivating account I didn’t learn in history and civics.” His contact is [email protected].

Health risk • Meru town’s sewerage plant, located near the Gakoromone open-air market, poses a grave health risk as the muck flows along the road into the river, where it mixes with the water used downstream, says Douglas Kaumbuthu Aritho. “The National Environment Management Authority and the local authorities can’t feign ignorance about this.” His email address is [email protected].

Nuclear power • This country, university don XN Iraki notes, “is a global leader in geothermal power generation, which is almost limitless”. He is, therefore, curious about a proposal to build nuclear power reactors along the coast and on Lake Victoria (Nam Lolwe) shores. I would wish to know why the interest in nuclear power development when some countries are doing away with it.” His contact is [email protected].

Funeral outings • There is nothing wrong with funerals being turned into exciting outings, with nice food and drinks, as happens in western Kenya, says Jim Webo. “It’s also a means to give the dead a fitting final send-off and it’s an opportunity for relatives and friends who have lost their loved ones to meet after a long time, the sombre mood notwithstanding. And politicians often donate funds to defray the costs.”
Have a befitting day, won’t you!
