Unity • New Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has started out on the right track with his calls for national unity and healing, says Mueni William. This, she adds, is the time to end the divisions that reached the peak with the impeachment of his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua. “It’s important that we now work together to foster progress for a brighter future.” Her contact is [email protected].

Garbage • The people who vigorously sweep and leave huge piles of garbage by the roadsides in Nairobi could do a much better job of cleaning up the city, says Ruth Gituma. “Why even sweep the litter in the first place? All the way from Wangari Maathai Road to the Thika Superhighway, the story is the same. Should the rains fall at any time, we risk having clogged drains.” Her contact is [email protected].

Power outage • Residents of Takaba Town in Mandera West, particularly Eldaso Village, have been without electricity for six months due to a faulty transformer, reports Aden Issak. “The blackout has affected more than 100 households and hampered businesses. Despite repeated appeals to those concerned, the problem persists. The transformer must be urgently repaired or replaced.” His contact is [email protected].

Hope • Outgoing US Vice President Kamala Harris’s electoral defeat to Democratic Party candidate Donald Trump, Francis Njuguna notes, has just confirmed his belief that the American voters were not ready for a female Black woman to lead their country. “But for me here, it's a good start and aluta continua (the struggle continues) as one day, it will be possible.” His contact is [email protected].

Irony • Donald Trump’s massive triumph in the just-ended US election despite his conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records is a mockery of America as a paragon of justice, says Jim Okwako. “How I wish someone could borrow a leaf from Kenyan lawyers and file a case to block his swearing-in come January to give Kamala Harris another chance to win the presidency.”

Have a democratic day, won’t you!
