Ego vote • The Mbeere North by-election has nothing to do with the locals, says Jimmy Thumbi. “President William Ruto initiated it to confirm whether he still has a chance in the Mt Kenya region, his deputy, Prof Kithure Kindiki, has clout, and ex-DP Rigathi Gachagua is the kingpin he claims to be. It’s unfair to subject people to a costly, unnecessary vote.” His contact is [email protected].

Eloquent • Deserving kudos, Taabu Tele says, are the president’s speech writers for “capturing his strength and the best mood in his State of the Nation address in poetry and prose”. He concludes: “The president was in his element with his bullish and arrogant pose, revising and revisiting his ‘Singapore’ dream roadmap in such superlative eloquence!” His contact is [email protected].

Bargaining tools • A review of the funding of political parties is unnecessary, says Limo Esquire. “Many are tribal outfits operated at the whim of some individuals for use as bargaining tools for their personal gain. Why is it that mature democracies such as the US have only two to three major political parties? I oppose the blanket funding of these parties.” His contact is [email protected].

Crime • It’s gratifying to note that the crime rate has declined, says Alnashir D. Walji. “Abductions, money laundering, mega scandals and murders unleash bitterness. In the past, bank robberies were so rampant, with gangsters being gunned down by police. Also, rape victims are deeply traumatised. The most deterrent sentences should be meted out.” His contact is [email protected].

Stability • The myth of Tanzania as the most stable nation in East and Central Africa has been terribly shattered by the shocking revelations of the killing of civilians in post-election mayhem, says Dave Tumbula. “The restoration of peace and stability is vital to safeguard the legacy of founding President Julius Nyerere, one of greatest leaders who played a key role in Africa’s emancipation.”

Have a stable day, won’t you!
