Alcohol abuse • The National Policy for the Prevention, Management and Control of Alcohol, Drugs and Substance Abuse 2025 “seems to be the prescription that the doctor has all along delayed for this country, where alcohol, drugs and substance abuse, is endemic and fatal”, says David Kigo. “This is a deeply rooted malady that is eating away at the very fabric of society.” His contact is [email protected].

Roadside garbage • The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), John Njuguna notes, is doing a good job clearing overgrown vegetation along the Nyeri-Nairobi highway, “improving visibility and enhancing road safety”. But he wishes KeNHA could also deal with roadside littering. “Garbage should be regularly collected and disposed of to conserve the environment.” His contact is [email protected].

City planning • Nairobi resident Diana Dsouza has an issue with the haphazard setting up of businesses. She poses: “Why are so many shopping malls, supermarkets, and fuel stations in one area? Today, there are already three malls/supermarkets and fuel stations on each of the roads around the posh Lavington suburb, fuelling the gridlock in the area.” Her email address is [email protected].

Packed food • There has been a reduction in the quantity and size of packed foodstuff and even sweets in recent years, even though the packaging remains the same, says Mohammed Fazal Hussein. “It’s a worldwide phenomenon that has taken root here also. It started with bread a long time back. But by the way, the price has not changed!” His email address is [email protected].

Guards welfare • Though they provide a vital service at the premises they protect, there is an appalling disregard for the security guards, especially by their employers, says Lincoln E. Oyigo. “Some have no shelter even when rain comes. This is experienced in many areas. Remember, they are also human beings but while the client is asleep the guard is alone out in the cold.” His contact is [email protected].

Have an appreciative day, won’t you!
