Self-preservation • The new UDA-ODM pact signed by President William Ruto and Raila Odinga is “further proof that the more politics changes the more old habits mutate into expediency and self-preservation”, remarks Taabu Tele. “Both parties shamelessly mouth fake platitudes, thus betraying the key objective of enhancing democracy to foster unity in diversity.” His contact is taabu.tele@mail.com.

Shameful • ODM leader Odinga and his lieutenants’ recent well-attended celebration of the party’s 20th anniversary in Busia County was marred by crude messaging by traditional singers, says Jim Okwako. “The women embarrassingly sang about the supposed HIV status of a political aspirant. Leaders and their aides should try to listen to and vet such songs to avert such silly goofs in future.”

Right of way • Ambulances deserve to be given the right of way, but Juliet Wairimu says this isn’t always the case. “I was recently in a bus at the junction of Ronald Ngala and Tom Mboya streets in Nairobi and an ambulance with its siren and flashing lights had been blocked by matatus. A traffic police officer was on her phone. I just hope no life was lost.” Her contact is mwenjeriithuki@gmail.com.

Empowerment • Women’s achievements should be commemorated every day and not just on the International Women’s Day, says Kelvin Malenya. “We should fight stereotypes and biases against women to broaden their perceptions, and celebrate success. We should also empower entrepreneurship and support girls’ education by mentoring them.” His email address is malenyakelvin1@gmail.com.

Decent dressing • Though universities allow a lot of latitude in student attire, there is a need for some general dressing code, says Luzinda Matenya. “There are no restrictions by the universities, but the students should wear some formal and smart attire. “It’s adviseable for all the students to present themselves in a manner acceptable to the society.” Her contact is matenyoluzinda1@gmail.com.

Have a decent day, won’t you!
