What you need to know:

  • Parents must shoulder the burden of hefty penalties slapped on students for extensive damage to school property during riots.
  • It's wrong for donors to force needy learners to recite their special prayers in exchange for meals in school feeding programmes.

Registration centres • The voter registration exercise won’t make a difference unless it’s carried out right at the grassroots, says Dr Kennedy Miyoro Mochabo. “The IEBC should not talk about launching a countrywide continuous voter registration and only have it at the constituency offices. Many of the Gen Z can’t travel to only the 291 offices just to register as voters.” His contact is [email protected].

Riots pain • Parents and guardians must shoulder the burden of the hefty penalties slapped on students for extensive damage to school property during riots, says Paul Khaemba. “Each of the 1,400 students of Litein Boys High School in Kericho County should pay for the repair of the damaged facilities. Let parents feel the pain of their children’s indiscipline.” His contact is [email protected].

Food aid • While it is okay for donors to provide meals to the many needy learners in their generous school feeding programmes, it’s quite wrong to force them to recite their special prayers, says Mwangi Wanjohi. “These well-wishers should, if they wish to get the pupils to learn about their religious beliefs, preach to them, but at a different forum.” His email address is [email protected].

Wrong priority • As the Health ministry helps the Social Health Authority (SHA) to recruit more members, David Githae reports, a tonsillitis outbreak is raging. “The ministry is out promoting SHA to get more members instead of raising awareness about epidemics and outlining prevention measures. What is more important, the prevention of diseases or health insurance?” His contact is [email protected].

Degrading courts • Why are there metal cages in courts in which suspects are held during trials? asks Mista Nyambati. Since suspects are innocent until proven guilty, he adds, “it’s so degrading, heartless and inhumane treatment!” Chief Justice Martha Koome, he pleads, should order their speedy removal. “Suspects should never be equated to animals in zoos!” His email address is [email protected].

Have a considerate day, won’t you!
