Too little too late: Counties must be well prepared to avoid perennial loss of life, property to floods
Vehicles navigate a flooded section of the road in Mombasa. The situation is worsened by uncollected garbage that block drainage systems during heavy rains.
Flood mitigation • The coming of the heavy rains is once again testing the preparedness of county governments, says Sammy Angwech. “When calamities such as deadly floods occur, they do too little too late, as lives are lost and property washed away. They should try to reduce these losses by ensuring that the drains are working properly and well-maintained.” His contact is [email protected].

Fill pothole • For years, Lee Evans says, there has been a huge pothole at the end of Miotoni Road in the leafy Karen suburb of Nairobi. With the current heavy rains, he’s even more worried. He adds: “It’s getting wider and deeper and now looks like a small lake. I hope the county government or the Kenya Urban Roads Authority will do something about it.” His contact is [email protected].

Bad conduct • It was shocking to hear that the deputy principal of a school in Meru was assaulted by a parent for doing his job, says Allan Kinyua Murianki. “A student had been sent home for indiscipline, but went elsewhere. His father then confronted the teacher, claiming that his son had gone missing. Violence against teachers should never be tolerated.” His contact is [email protected].

Brazen disregard • Why does the government take us for idiots? asks Evans Macharia Mwangi, citing its recent takeover of some Nairobi City County’s functions. “After it signed the deal with the county government, it then started organising public participation on the same. Surely, this administration can treat us better than this. But some of us are now wiser!” [email protected].

Curbing accidents • The increasing fatal accidents call for serious efforts to improve road safety, says Zakia Nabil from Garissa. “The major causes include speeding, reckless and drink driving, and distraction by using phones. Others are poor road conditions and crossing roads at undesignated points. Traffic rules should be strictly enforced.” Her email address is [email protected].
