Positioning Kenya as a premier destination through sports tourism

Kenya’s packed sporting calendar over the coming weeks is more than a celebration of competition. It is a deliberate and strategic pillar in the agenda to position Kenya as a premier global tourism destination.
From rugby and golf to motorsport and athletics, the major events we are hosting are powerful marketing platforms that allow us to showcase Kenya to the world through the universal language of sport.
The hosting of the HSBC SVNS Division 2 rugby tournament in Nairobi on February 14-15, 2026, marked a historic milestone as Kenya became the first East African nation to stage a World Rugby Sevens event. Beyond the excitement on the pitch, the tournament placed Nairobi at the centre of a globally broadcast spectacle. Millions of viewers tuned in for the rugby, simultaneously experiencing Kenya’s vibrancy, organisational capability and hospitality.
The event successfully built on the legacy of our national teams and transformed Kenyans’ passion for rugby into a tangible tourism asset.

On the other hand, Golf continues to strengthen our positioning in the high-value travel segment. The Magical Kenya Open, part of the DP World Tour, remains a cornerstone of our sports tourism portfolio.
With a $2.7 million prize purse and global broadcast reach into hundreds of millions of homes, the tournament allows us to present Kenya as both a competitive golfing destination and an immersive leisure experience. Visitors drawn by the event often extend their stay to enjoy our safari circuits, coastline and cultural attractions, blending sport with exploration in a uniquely Kenyan way.
In motorsport, the iconic Safari Rally Kenya, part of the World Rally Championship, delivers unmatched global visibility. The dramatic landscapes of Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley provide a breath-taking backdrop that reaches audiences of over 100 million worldwide. Every stage broadcast is more than a competition. It is a visual narrative of Kenya’s natural beauty and adventure offering.
Our athletics heritage, perhaps our most powerful global sporting brand, is further elevated by the Kip Keino Classic. Hosting Olympic champions and world record holders in Nairobi reinforces Kenya’s identity as the “Home of Champions.” It also inspires visitors to experience the high-altitude training environments that produce world-beating athletes. Athletics connects deeply with our national story, and we are leveraging that authenticity to attract sports enthusiasts and experiential travellers alike.
A central pillar of our strategy is harnessing the influence of Kenya’s sporting icons as destination ambassadors. Our global tourism ambassador, Faith Kipyegon, embodies excellence, resilience and national pride. Her global appeal transcends the track.
When champions speak about training in Kenya’s high-altitude locations or representing our flag on the world stage, they humanise our destination brand in ways that traditional marketing cannot replicate. Their stories create emotional connections, and emotion drives travel decisions.
Underpinning these efforts is sustained investment in infrastructure and event readiness across Nairobi, Naivasha and other event hosting key regions.
World-class facilities not only enable us to host events of international calibre but also strengthen our capacity to bid for future assignments, including preparations toward the Africa Cup of Nations.
Sports tourism is firmly embedded within the National Tourism Strategy 2025-2030 as a high-impact growth segment designed to diversify markets, attract higher-spending visitors, and encourage longer stays.

We are intentional about converting sporting visibility into tourism value. Through structured partnerships with event organisers, we facilitate curated excursions for athletes, officials and the media to experience our wildlife, beaches and culture. These immersive engagements transform participants into authentic brand advocates whose shared experiences resonate across global audiences long after the final whistle.
The government of Kenya has set an ambitious target of 5.5 million international visitor arrivals by 2027. Major sporting events are not standalone spectacles, they are critical accelerators toward this goal.
Each tournament generates global broadcast coverage. Each visiting athlete and fan becomes a potential ambassador. The cumulative effect is sustained international visibility, strengthened destination appeal and measurable economic impact.
Through a deliberate and integrated sports tourism strategy, we are turning competition into conversion. When the world tunes in to watch a tournament in Kenya, they are also being invited to discover a destination defined by adventure, authenticity and warmth.
Our task is to ensure that once they experience Kenya, whether as competitors, spectators or viewers, they are inspired to visit, to explore and to return.
