Christine Awuor phoned her boyfriend on Wednesday night, hoping to speak to him, but unfortunately, the call went unanswered.

Frustrated, the 23-year-old woman fired multiple WhatsApp messages to the man, but still she did not get an immediate response.

All this while, her boyfriend was engrossed in a football match being beamed live on a big screen at a pub in Kendu Bay, where he works at a college.

This angered Awuor, who sent even more messages, including some where she accused the man of cheating on her with another woman.

By the time the boyfriend got an opportunity to read Ms Awuor’s protest messages, the damage had already been done. She had already made up her mind to end her life.

Five days later, Awuor’s lifeless body and that of her five-month-old baby were found inside her single-room house by neighbours.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was battling depression, which she had struggled to address without success. This was further confirmed through a message she sent to her boyfriend a few days before the fateful day.

“This is worse than heartbreak,” she wrote. “You have broken my heart,” another message read.

At some point, Ms Awuor, who worked in Sindo Town as an M-Pesa agent, told her boyfriend not to expect to see her again.

“Hautaniona tena, hautanipata (you will never see me again, and you won’t find me),” read part of the messages.

Intriguingly, she would also ask for forgiveness if she had done anything wrong against the man, saying she was suffering from depression.

In one of the messages, she even threatened the man by saying she could use black magic to harm him.

Sindo town

The messages forced the boyfriend to travel from his workplace to Sindo town in a desperate attempt to pacify her.

Upon arriving in Sindo, the boyfriend persuaded Awuor to accompany him to the office of the area assistant chief, Caroline Ngere, hoping that the administrator would help them iron out their differences.

According to Ms Ngere, the woman accused her boyfriend of not giving her adequate attention.

“She accused the boyfriend of ignoring her calls. She also claimed that the man would read her WhatsApp messages but fail to respond,” said the administrator.

According to the chief, the two met in January 2025 and were in the early stages of building their relationship.

Ms Ngere disclosed that the M-Pesa agent was in another relationship last year, but it suddenly ended.

The assistant chief said that during the entire period of the dialogue, Ms Awuor did not exhibit any signs of someone who could end her own life.

Ms Ngere said the two were counselled and told how to address issues affecting them.

“I was hoping they would reconcile and continue with their relationship. But it took a different turn when the woman decided to end her life and that of her baby,” the administrator said.

Over the past five days, witnesses said Awuor was jovial at work and did not display any sign of depression.

Serving customers

“She was always smiling and happy while serving her customers,” a resident said.

Awuor left behind a suicide note where she blamed her boyfriend for the physiological problems she was facing.

While confirming the incident, Suba Central Sub County Police Commander Caxton Dunda, said that in the suicide note, the deceased claimed that her boyfriend had neglected her, together with her child.

“The case is being investigated and very soon we shall be able to establish what could have led the woman to hang herself,” said Mr Dunda.
