Gang kills night guard, 70, steals alcohol from bar in Homa Bay

Police in Homa Bay are investigating an attack on a security guard at a business establishment on Friday night.
Police in Homa Bay are investigating an incident where a security guard at a business establishment was murdered on Friday night before the criminals stole alcohol from a bar in the area.
County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Commander Mr Charles Koilenge said his officers are following crucial leads to enable them to arrest suspects in the murder case.
The guard, identified as Harrison Apollo, aged 70, was killed while on duty at Milimani Events, a business enterprise located along Homa Bay-Rongo Road.
The establishment offers hospitality services including tents and chairs hire services. It also has a bar and a car wash.
Apollo, who used to guard property within the compound at night, was hacked to death by the assailants.
Mr Koilenge said he had multiple head injuries.
“He might have been hit with blunt objects leading to his death,” he said.
At the scene, workers who reported for duty on Saturday morning discovered the body in a fresh pool of blood.
The body was lying on a chair that is normally used by customers as they drink at the bar.
There were also signs that the body was moved to the location from one corner of the compound.
There was a trail of blood from one part of the bar to the other.
Part of the investigation process includes previewing CCTV footage at the scene to see what happened during the incident.
Mr Koilenge said investigators have established that CCTV cameras were switched off sometimes in the night.
“The business uses solar energy and the batteries were running low into the night,” he said.
Preliminary investigations have established that the criminals gained entry into the compound through the fence.
While inside, they went to the counter where alcohol is sold and took several bottles.
“They were also targeting the safe and cash register which they broke. They ransacked the entire premise,” the DCI commander said.
During the breakage, the gang also unmounted TV sets which were pinned on the wall and took them away.
Mr Koilenge said investigative officers are yet to establish the value of property stolen.
“We have not established their motive but our officers are investigating the case,” he said.
The body of the guard was moved to Homa Bay County hospital mortuary.
