Police in Kiserian, Kajiado North sub-county, are holding a man and his son over the gruesome murder of their neighbour.

Police said on Thursday that preliminary investigations had identified the duo as persons of interest due to previous death threats made against 30-year-old Rose Soila.

Before her death, Ms Soila had recorded a statement at the Kiserian police station about the threats she had received over a land ownership dispute.

Ms Soila was murdered on the night of November 2 and her badly mutilated body dumped in a bush inside her compound.

According to a police report seen by the Nation, the assailant(s) attacked her after entering her semi-permanent home at night by breaking one of the windows.

At the time of the incident, police said the deceased was in the house with her last born daughter, aged two, while her husband was being held at the Kiserian Police Station for an unspecified investigation. The child, who was sleeping in the bedroom, was not injured.

"The deceased was found dead in her compound with a deep cut on her neck, her eyes gouged out and her forehead skin peeled off," the police report reads.

“She had injuries on her arms, indicating she might have fought with her killers before she was overpowered. The killer's weapon (knife) was recovered from the scene. The sitting room was drenched in blood and the furniture was disturbed, indicating a possible struggle."

A post-mortem examination conducted by Dr Eunice Mugweru at Ngong Sub County Hospital on November 5 revealed that Soila's throat had been slit due to severe trauma consistent with an assault.

Vaginal swabs and other samples were taken to establish whether the deceased had been sexually assaulted during the incident.

Ms Soila's murder has left the village of Olteyani in a state of shock. Neighbours and relatives have condemned the incident.

Ms Jane Nayanoi said her sister did not deserve to die in such a gruesome manner.

"The family is yet to come to terms with the death of our sister. Even if she had wronged somebody, she did not deserve that,” said Ms Nayanoi.

Kajiado County Police Commander Reuben Muli said the two suspects were persons of interest.

"The two are assisting with the investigation. We seek to establish the motive of the murder. So far, we are following crucial leads,” he said.

The family's spokesperson, Peninah Lelente, said Soila will be buried on Friday in Olteyani Village, Kajiado.
