Nacada seizes Sh5.28m counterfeit alcohol in Kitengela raid

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) has impounded counterfeit alcohol with an estimated street value of Sh5.28 million in an operation in Kitengela town, Kajiado County.
A multi-agency team, including Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials and the National Police Service (NPS), raided Scotland Wines and Spirits liquor outlet.
During the raid on Tuesday evening, the owner, said to have been on KRA and police radar, was arrested. The suspect led the officers to a concealed storage container within the township that had stocks of suspected the counterfeit alcohol.
It included 528 boxes branded as various popular spirit brands. It comprised 230 boxes of Trace Vodka, 107 boxes of Dalas Brandy, 44 boxes of Supa Vodka, 22 boxes of Rider Vodka, 85 boxes of Triger Gin, and 12 boxes of Tiger Vodka.
Each box contained 20 bottles of 250ml capacity. The KRA enforcement team took custody of the entire consignment, which was promptly escorted to the KRA yard in Nairobi for further investigation, and eventual destruction.

Officers from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) collected samples for laboratory analysis to confirm the products' authenticity and determine the level of risk to public health.
Nacada Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa said that the operation is a direct component of the ongoing Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) directed by Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen.
“This successful operation in Kitengela, under the Rapid Results Initiative, is a clear testament to our sustained resolve,” Dr Omerikwa said.
“To all the merchants of death engaged in the criminal counterfeiting and drug sale business, hear this clearly: Nacada is coming for you. Your days of profiting from the health and lives of Kenyans are numbered. We will pursue you. This seizure is just the beginning.”
The suspect was taken to Kitengela police station and released on Sh100,000 cash bail as he waits to be arraigned in court.
Kajiado satellites towns, including Ngong, Ong'ata Rongai, Kiserian and Kitengela, have been hot spots in counterfeit liquor with similar raids conducted in the past.
