End of the road for two robbery suspects in Matungu

Two suspected gangsters were on Thursday evening gunned down by police and an AK47 rifle recovered in Matungu in Kakamega County. However, one suspect escaped.
The 6:50pm incident caused a commotion in the estate as members of the public gathered at the scene. The victims had no identification documents.
The three men were being pursued by the officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters, in connection with a spate of criminal activities witnessed in parts of Kakamega and Vihiga counties.
Murder and robbery cases
They are said to have been hiding in a rental house at Campsite estate in Mayoni ward.
According to Matungu Sub-County Police Commander Mr Joseph Cheruiyot, officers from the region and DCI Headquarters, while on operation within Matungu, came into contact with the suspects linked to the murder and robbery cases in a rented house.
Most of the reported cases are committed within Butere and Khwisero sub counties.
"On sensing the presence of the police officers, one of them drew a rifle ready to fire at the officers. The officers responded swiftly and fatally shot two unknown suspects dead. One of them escaped," said Mr Cheruiyot.
AK47 rifle and rounds of ammunition
A search conducted in the house they had rented recovered a motorcycle of Bajaj model painted black and concealed with covers in Rastafarian colours.
The recovered motorcycle is believed to belong to a police officer, Jonathan Kibet, who was attacked on November 12, 2024 midnight at Butere Township. The officers was seriously during the assault.
Also recovered was an AK47 rifle which with a defaced serial number and 13 rounds of ammunition.
Mr Cheruiyot said DCI officers from Matungu are investigating the incident and pursuing the suspect who escaped. The bodies of the slain suspects were moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary.
