A man has been arrested and charged before a Kericho court in connection with the murder of his 100-year-old mother.

Julius Cheruiyot Bett was arraigned before Kericho High Court Judge Joseph Sergon on Wednesday.

The prosecution, led by David Dedha from the Director of Public Prosecutions, told the court that investigations had uncovered overwhelming evidence linking the suspect to the killing.

The deceased, Grace Chelangat, is said to have been murdered on March 7, 2026, at Kiptere location in Sigowet Sub-county, Kericho County.

The court heard that the accused allegedly killed his mother by driving a motor vehicle into her. It also emerged that the accused had longstanding disputes with his mother over the sharing of family property prior to the incident.

The suspect denied the charges but the court denied him bond following an application by the prosecution.

In its application, the prosecution argued that the accused is a flight risk and could interfere with ongoing investigations.

The case will be mentioned on May 12, 2026.
