A businessman alleged to have harassed Mwea legislator Mary Maingi was on Monday presented before a Kirinyaga court to face charges of cyber harassment.

Nairobi-based businessman Joseph Muiruri Kamau, 34, was produced at a court in Wang’uru to answer to the criminal charge.

He was accused that on March 27, 2025, he willfully sent a WhatsApp message to the MP threatening to have her stripped naked.

According to court documents, Mr Kamau uttered such words against the MP, knowing that his conduct was of indecent or gross offensive nature thus affecting the MP.

However, Mr Kamau denied the charge before Principal Magistrate Ms Martha Opanga.

Lawyer Kimunto Magara, who is representing the businessman, applied to have her client released on bond. She argued that he had been in police custody for more than 96 hours.

She told the court that her client was not a flight risk and that she will ensure that he attends court whenever required.

Further, Ms Magara said her client is ailing and should be freed to seek treatment.

The magistrate allowed the application and ordered that Mr Kamau be released on Sh100,000 bond with a surety of the same amount until July 28 when the case will be heard.

Mr Kamau was seized by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers at Umoja estate in Nairobi last Thursday.

He was locked up at Kayole police station before he was transferred to Wang'uru where he was held for questioning.

The prosecution will produce four witnesses during trial, with the MP being one of them.
