Three people died on Sunday in Kirinyaga county in a road crash involving a vehicle that was transporting miraa and a boda boda.

The accident occurred when a Toyota Probox, which was traveling from Embu towards Makutano, rammed into the boda boda.

The boda boda rider, his passenger as well as the miraa vehicle driver all died in the crash.

"The miraa vehicle rolled several times after hitting the motorcycle. The accident claimed three lives," Mr Martin Njoroge, a witness, said.

Mr Njoroge said the driver was trying to overtake another vehicle when it rammed into the motorcycle.

The bodies were taken to Kerugoya Referral Hospital mortuary while the badly damaged motorcycle and the Probox car were towed to Makutano Police Station.

Residents lamented that miraa vehicles have been causing road accidents in the area. They called on the government to intervene.

Last month, during a Jukwaa la Usalama forum, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen ordered a crackdown on speeding miraa vehicles which he noted were responsible for increasing road accidents in Kirinyaga.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru also expressed concern over the rising cases of fatal road accidents involving miraa vehicles and called on the government to address the matter urgently.

According to Governor Waiguru, miraa vehicles have caused the death of more than 20 people in the region in the past one year.
