A man from Kirinyaga who is accused of hacking his wife and four children to death following a domestic quarrel was Wednesday presented to the Kerugoya High Court after detectives completed their investigations.

However, he did not take plea to murder charges as he had no lawyer to represent him.

Justice Richard Mwongo ordered that Paul Murage be remanded until January 24, 2022 when he will take plea.

The court directed that Mr Murage be remanded at the Kerugoya GK Prison to allow the provision of a state lawyer to represent him.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Vincent Mamba, informed the court that the accused had undergone mental assessment and it was established that he was fit to stand trial.

Mr Murage went violent and allegedly killed his wife Millicent Muthoni, 38, and his four children Nelly Wawira, 12, Gifton Bundi, 7, Sheromit Wambui, 5, and one-year-old Clifton Murage.

After the gruesome murders, Mr Murage surrendered himself to Kianyaga Police Station and escorted them to River Murubara where he had dumped an axe which he used to eliminate his entire family.

The murder weapon was later retrieved and will be used as an exhibit in court during trial.
