On November 16, 2025, a college student, Jackline Ruguru, left her Ngiriambu village home in Kirinyaga County to Kianyaga town to buy body lotion.
That was the last time she was seen alive.
One week later, the decomposing body of the 22-year-old student was found dumped in a coffee farm at Ngotho area in Gichugu Constituency.
She had been raped while her right hand and breast were chopped off and taken away by the killers.

It could not be immediately established why the student was hacked to death, but police said they are treating the matter as murder.
According to the parents, their daughter, who was studying at a college in Embu, arrived home from college on a Sunday. However, on the same day, she decided to go to Kianyaga to buy some lotion, promising to return home in the evening.
When she failed to show up, her parents became worried and looked for her, to no avail.
Body found
After seven days, some villagers stumbled on the naked body of the student and reported the matter to Kianyaga police station.
Moments later, the officers rushed to the scene and removed the badly mutilated body to Kerugoya referral hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Kirinyaga East Sub-County police boss Mr Johnson Wachira said detectives want to establish the motive behind the gruesome murder of the learner.
"We can't tell why the student was murdered, but investigations will reveal the truth of the matter," said Mr Wachira.
The family is now crying for justice, saying their daughter was an innocent person who was eliminated in a very cruel manner.
"We want to know who murdered our daughter and why," said Mr Moses Kariuki Kuria, the father.
Mr Kuria described his daughter, the lastborn in a family of three, as a very bright child whose dream of becoming a secretary was cut short by criminals.
"We have recorded statements with the police and we hope that the criminals will be exposed," he said.
