Four Kisii schools closed after unrest

Kisii School, Sameta Boys, Masosa Mixed and Sironga Girls schools are among the learning institutions that have suffered unrest in Gusii.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the unrest and fires, though the schools or education officials in Kisii and Nyamira counties have given no official statements.
On Saturday, Kisii School was closed indefinitely after students torched the school captain’s cube.
This incident occurred as parents reported to the school for a scheduled visiting day. No student was injured.

Sources said there had been tension in the school, with students threatening unspecified action, as they demanded to go home following unrest in various schools across the country.
"In consultation with the Board of Management and given the prevailing circumstances, it has been decided that the boys leave for their homes today, June 6," reads a message from the school principal, Fred Mogaka.
The message was sent on parents’ WhatsApp groups.
Parents expressed their disappointment, stating it is difficult for them given the current economic challenges.
Ms Winnie Malemba, a parent from Nairobi who had gone to visit her son, said, "We have received a message asking us to pick our children and take them home."
Mr Geoffrey Nyandeka, another parent, said, "The administration should have addressed this earlier. We have spent resources to come for visiting day, and we will still have to bring the boys back."
At Sironga Girls High School, tension started on Friday with Form Threes, a source told the Nation.
The school allowed the Form Threes to go home to collect fee balances, while Form Fours and Grade 10 students remained.
On Saturday, the Form Fours started shouting during the church service, demanding to be allowed to go home too. The school was forced to close as a result, according to the source.
"The girls in our school have this morning turned rowdy and chaotic; hence, a decision has been made that they all proceed home immediately. Parents are therefore advised to urgently organise to have the girls travel/pick them up immediately. Please act urgently!" a message from the school management read.
Sameta Boys High School was closed indefinitely on Monday following a dormitory fire that destroyed a section of the institution. The incident caused extensive property damage.
At Masosa Mixed Secondary School in West Mugirango constituency, Nyamira County, a school dormitory was burned on Wednesday.
The school principal, James Mogusu, said that the fire incident began during afternoon classes.
“We were already in our afternoon school programme when, at around 1500 hours, we saw thick black smoke emanating from the girls’ dormitory. We rushed to extinguish the fire, which spread rapidly across the dormitory block. We called the county disaster team, who responded swiftly, along with community members and other well-wishers who all assisted us in putting out the fire,” he said.
Mr Mogusu confirmed that no students were injured in the fire. However, it destroyed bedding, student boxes, and the entire roof of the dormitory that houses 104 girls.
