Tension was high at Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Bobasi, Kisii, where students attacked a multi-agency team patroling the institution during KCSE exams.

Learners reportedly attacked Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) officials and police officers on Thursday.

In a shocking display of defiance, rioting students snatched a pistol from a police officer and were in possession of the firearm for nearly three hours, before it was recovered.

According to Kisii County Commander Ronald Kirui, Knec officials and some of the officers caught up in the incident sustained injuries.

"We are here because of the incident that occurred between the first and second papers, during which KNEC officials, accompanied by police officers from Nairobi for examination monitoring, were accosted by the candidates at this school," he said.

"We conducted a serious search in the school and have recovered the firearm. It is now with us, and the circumstances surrounding its loss are under investigation."

Anti-riot police have since been deployed to quell the situation.

Following the unrest, authorities decided to close the school and sent all students home.

School's history of unrest

In July this year, the school was closed following violent protests triggered by the appointment of a new principal.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) replaced then principal, David Ogega, with one from a nearby school, causing chaos among the students.

Tensions erupted then turned violent as students clashed with teachers, throwing stones at each other. Some students, with their faces concealed, took cover behind classroom corridors and the administration block.

Police were quickly dispatched to restore order, but the situation deteriorated as students continued to resist. The unrest escalated and culminated in the burning of one dormitory before learners fled campus, leaving local residents in shock.
