Police summon MP Zaheer Jhanda over violent clashes at Linda Mwananchi rally

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kisii Central have summoned Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda over the violence meted out on Linda Mwananchi politicians in Keumbu last Friday, during which one person was killed.
Vincent Mapinduzi, who fell from a speeding vehicle as motorists tried to evade stones being hurled at them in Keumbu, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning.
The deceased was part of the media team accompanying the Linda Mwananchi brigade.
Police headquarters confirmed that security agencies have so far arrested seven suspects and assured Kenyans that efforts are underway to apprehend more individuals linked to the violence.
Police headquarters assured the public that all those involved in the violence would be brought to justice.
“The National Police Service wishes to provide a further update on the ongoing investigations and security operation following the violent attacks that occurred at Keumbu, along the Kisii–Keroka Road, on Friday, July 3, 2026. The operation, led by the OCS Keumbu and DCI Kisii Central, has resulted in the successful arrest of four additional suspects, bringing the total number of arrests to seven,” the National Police Service said.
The statement added:
“Furthermore, Hon Zaheer Jhanda, MP for Nyaribari Chache, has this morning been summoned to appear before the Kisii County DCI office in connection with the ongoing investigations.”

Separately, Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gesairo and his Bomachoge Borabu counterpart, Obadiah Barongo, who announced the death of the young man, warned state agencies against the culture of arming and supporting political militias.
Speaking at Engoko Centre in Keroka on Sunday, the two legislators said that 20 people had been injured in the attack.
They warned that victims could be forced to arm themselves for protection against what they termed state-sponsored thuggery if the trend continues.
