Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's personal physician Odhiambo Olel dies
Former vice-president Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's personal physician and Nyayo era detainee Dr Odhiambo Olel has died in Kisumu.
The late Dr Olel's son, Mr Francis Olel (Advocate), told Nation that his father died at around 11:30 pm on Friday night.
"He developed breathing problems at home and was rushed to Kisumu Specialists Hospital where he lost his life in a suspected heart attack. He died barely two weeks to his 86th birthday on January 23," Mr Olel said.
"We are in the process of transferring the body from Kisumu Specialists Hospital to Aga Khan Hospital (Mortuary)," he added.
Dr Olel, a public health consultant, was a long serving personal doctor of ex-vice president Jaramogi Oginga Odinga - the ODM leader Raila Odinga's father.
Dr Olel was one of those arrested and detained during the second liberation struggle in Kenya.
He was on April 6, 1987 arrested and charged with being a member of an unlawful society contrary to section 6 (a) of the Societies Act (cap 108 ).
It was alleged that between 1977 and March 20, 1987, he was a member of an unlawful society called “Mwakenya”.
He was then convicted and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment before lodging an appeal following claims of torture.
