Lamu County Assembly rejects Governor Timamy's DG nominee, again
The Lamu County Assembly has rejected Governor Issa Timamy Deputy Governor nominee James Gichu for the second time.
This is after the motion for Mr Gichu’s approval, which was tabled by Leader of Majority and Kiunga Ward Representative Bwana Mohamed Bwana Tuesday afternoon, failed to get simple majority in the House vote.
Only 13 MCAs out of the 19 were present during the Tuesday session at the Lamu County Assembly. Of these, only four voted in support of the motion while nine voted against it.
About two weeks ago, the MCAs rejected Mr Gichu after a similar motion failed to get support of the simple majority in the House.
The motion had been tabled by Mr Bwana on October 30, 2024. After a consultative session on the motion, Speaker Azhar Ali Mbarak subjected it to an open vote without any debate in the House. But out of the 18 MCAs present, 9 voted against the motion while another nine supported it.
One ward representative, Mercy Wangeco, was absent.
Support from a simple majority — that is, from more than half of the members present — is a requirement for a motion to pass.
Back to the drawing board
MCAs' rejection of his nominee for the second time sends Governor Timamy, yet again, to the drawing board. He is seeking to replace the late Raphael Munyua Ndung'u who died on September 6, 2024, while receiving treatment in Nairobi.
Mr Timamy now has the option of nominating someone else in the next 14 days.
