Lamu West MP aspirant arrested for interrupting DP Ruto’s rally
Lamu West MP aspirant Abdirashid Mwaura Njuguna was Friday arrested for disrupting Deputy President William Ruto’s rally in Hindi.
Lamu Central police boss Geoffrey Osanane said the man is being held at the Hindi Police Station awaiting to be arraigned in court on Monday. He said the politician is expected to face not less than four charges, including resisting police arrest, public interference among others.
Prior to DP Ruto’s arrival at Hindi Town, Mr Mwaura is said to have parked some of his Azimio la Umoja Coalition-branded vehicles by the roadside, just within the same area where the Deputy President was to address his supporters.
Shortly after DP Ruto arrived and started addressing his supporters, the politician is said to have tried to sneak into the crowd while driving one of his branded vehicles, a move that prompted the police to stop him.
“We tried to stop him but he refused. He was forcing himself into the crowd that was listening to DP Ruto. That’s when we swung into action. He also resisted police arrest but we still managed to arrest him,” said Mr Osanane.
“What he did wasn’t right. It portrayed a bad image and was ill-intended. Trying to interfere with opponents’ rallies isn’t accepted at all. If he wants a political rally, then he should organize his own and after informing us, we will provide him with security as well. We won’t allow people to cause unnecessary chaos during this period of political campaigns,” the officer stated.
Some of Mr Mwaura’s supporters who witnessed the incident accused the police of harassment and intimidation.
The 35-year-old is among 12 aspirants who have so far declared interest to unseat Stanley Muthama as Lamu West MP.
