The Mandera County government has announced that it had started training the newly recruited 450 Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers.

The training, which will last two weeks, is meant to achieve professional development for the ECDE teachers.

The county is focusing on improving education standards from the nursery school level in order to compete effectively with other regions in national examinations.

The previously marginalised county was ranked second-last in the 2013 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam.

It also seeks to lay the foundation for quality learning and improve children’s access, retention and completion in basic education.

The training which is also meant to train teachers and teacher trainers on the current instructional methods and approaches in ECDE will also strive to develop culturally relevant materials that will fit local needs and context.

POOR PERFORMANCE

The county, which in the past years has performed dismally in national examinations, is expected to raise its education standards in the coming years through the training.

According to the county secretary for education Johora Mohamed, special attention will also be given to children with special needs.

The county is also construction ECDE training centres in all its sub counties.

Last month, the county government also launched the second term primary and secondary schools county mock exams in a bid to help improve performance in national examinations.

Governor Ali Roba said it was only through regular testing of the candidates that Mandera’s image will change at the national level.

The governor said his administration was in talks with the ministry of Education to acquire quality assessment officers at every ward level.

“We want to try our best to have a quality assurance officer at the ward level to improve our academic performance,” said Mr Roba.

The county government has pledged to give the best female student who scores an A plain in the 2014 KCSE exam a reward of Sh200,000.

The best male student in the same exam will get Sh100,000.
