Keep off Mt Kenya region, it is my backyard, DP Kithure Kindiki tells Rigathi Gachagua
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki addressing a gathering at Gakoromone market, Meru County, on March 2, 2026, after inspecting the construction of Meru Level Five Hospital Ward Blocks.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said the recent by-election wins in Mbeere North and Isiolo South is an indicator that the Mt Kenya region, a pro-government zone. Prof Kindiki also told the opposition to prepare for a tough contest in the 2027 General Election.
His remarks come even as the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua plans a three-day tour to popularise the united opposition in Tharaka-Nithi and Meru counties this week.
However, Prof Kindiki laughed off his predecessor’s assertion that the Mt Kenya region was an opposition zone, claiming that their campaigns in Mbeere North did not bear fruits.
"Last year, he came to Mbeere North while chest-thumping that he is the king of the mountain. After the campaigns, we floored them, and the UDA won the seat. Last week, we felled them again at Evurore and Muminji wards as well as in Isiolo South Constituency. Let this be a warning that we’re not done. You have not seen anything yet," Prof Kindiki said.
He added, "Even Meru County is now a UDA Zone. There is nothing for you here."
Speaking after inspecting the construction of Meru Level Five Hospital Ward Blocks on Monday, the DP warned the opposition leaders against disrespecting him while in the region.
"When you come here to do your campaigns, do it with respect. Do not insult other leaders, sell your agenda and go," DP Kindiki said.
While enumerating the government's development agenda in the region, Prof Kindiki said the opposition was keen on misleading Kenyans on ongoing development programmes.
At Meru Level Five hospital, the Deputy President said the national government is spending one billion shillings on the construction of a twin tower complex with modern facilities.
"Expansion of the hospital will introduce specialised facilities like delicate surgical procedures, cancer and kidney treatment to pave the way for the hospital’s elevation to Level 6, a National Teaching and Referral Hospital. This hospital serves Kenyans from the entire Eastern and North Eastern regions as well as Laikipia County," he said.
The DP said the government has also released another one billion shillings for the construction of an ultra-modern fresh produce market at Gakoromone in Meru Town.
"The contractor will be on the ground in the next four weeks once traders have been given alternative trading sites. The county government should fast-track the relocation so that construction can kick off," DP Kindiki told traders at Gakoromone market.
He was accompanied by Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma, Deputy Governor Linda Kiome, MPs Elizabeth Kailemia, Rahim Dawood (Imenti North), Dan Kiili (Igembe Central), Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East) and other leaders.
Mr Mutuma said that his administration was collaborating with the national government with the aim of delivering development projects that would benefit the people of Meru County.
