Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested three suspects linked to the gruesome murder of Kilifi County IEBC official Aisha Abubakar.

Ms Abubakar was killed in a daring invasion at her home in Shanzu, Mombasa, on January 5, 2025.

According to sources involved in the investigations, the suspects were tracked down through a phone that had been stolen from the home.

A police source told the Nation on Tuesday that the suspects were arrested within Kisauni Sub-County after a forensic manhunt led by crime busters from DCI Kisauni, backed by the Operation Support Unit (OSU) and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.

During the attack, the gang had made off with valuables, including two Samsung phones, an iPad, a 65-inch television, a sound system, and ATM cards whose PINs they coerced from the victims.

Isa Omari, Brian Shikuku Mudari, and Bryan Templer Oyare were arraigned at the Shanzu Law Courts on Tuesday, where the prosecution sought 21 days to wrap up investigations.

The chilling attack occurred in the early hours of January 5 at around 3am, when the intruders forced their way into Ms Abubakar’s home.

The assailants gained entry by cutting through the kitchen window’s metallic grills, catching the household unawares.

Ms Abubakar's son was struck unconscious as he attempted to protect his mother.

The attackers then turned their attention to Ms Abubakar, ignoring her desperate pleas for mercy. She was brutally stabbed multiple times as the invaders ransacked the home.

The DCI assured the public that investigations were ongoing and that all efforts were being made to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The incident reignited concerns about security in the coastal region, with residents calling on authorities to enhance patrols and crack down on criminal gangs.
