Sheikh Sukyan Omar appointed Acting Chief Kadhi
Senior Principal Kadhi Sukyan Hassan Omar is the newly appointed Acting Chief Kadhi.
The Judiciary has appointed Senior Principal Kadhi Sheikh Sukyan Omar Hassan as the Acting Chief Kadhi.
The position became vacant after Sheikh Abdul Halim, who had served as Chief Kadhi since 2023, died on July 10 this year.
Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfridah Mokaya announced that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), during its meeting on July 14, approved the appointment in line with Article 170 of the Constitution and Section 2 of the Kadhis’ Courts Act.
“The Commission considered and approved the appointment of a serving Kadhi to act in the position of Chief Kadhi,” said Ms Mokaya in a statement issued on Monday.
Sheikh Omar assumed office on August 6 and will be responsible for discharging all duties and responsibilities of the Chief Kadhi during the acting period.
According to the Judiciary, the acting appointment will run for three months or until the position is substantively filled — whichever comes first.
The Chief Kadhi’s office is the highest authority in the country’s Islamic judicial system, with jurisdiction over matters of personal law such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance for Muslims.
Sheikh Omar, who has served in the Kadhis’ Court for over two decades, is expected to provide leadership in the Islamic courts and oversee the work of other Kadhis across the country during his tenure.
