The Kenol-Sagana Road

What you need to know:

  • Church leaders have warned drivers not to be so focused on making money that they endanger their passengers.

Hundreds of Christians and church leaders on Thursday held prayers on the accident prone Kenol- Sagana Highway.

Led by Rev Edward Mwai of Jesus Winner Ministries, the group visited black spots including Tana River Bridge, Kambiti, Murang’a Teachers College and Kenol town.

He said road accidents had led to thousands of Kenyans becoming bedridden in hospitals.

The Kenol-Sagana highway has seen reports of accident happening almost daily.

About three weeks ago, over ten people perished on the Tana River Bridge following an accident involving three vehicles.

Another 11 people died on the spot when a 14 seater matatu collided with a canter lorry. A second matatu was damaged and the occupants injured.

Murang’a South police boss Anthony Onyango and area Traffic Commander Loise Gatimu said one matatu enroute from Kirinyaga to Nairobi attempted to overtake but collided head on with an oncoming canter.

“All ten occupants in the matatu died on the spot while the canter driver also lost his life,” said the OCPD.

Passengers in the second matatu were rushed to hospital in the 8pm incident.

The clergy men said prayers and careful driving are important for drivers to reduce the number of accidents.

He also warned drivers not to be so focused on making money that they endanger their passengers.

“Some do not care that they are ferrying passengers and rush to make that extra coin at the expense of passengers,” he said.
