The Ministry of Health has launched investigations into allegations of malpractices, systemic fraud and medical negligence at Nakuru's Sisto Mazzoldi Hospital.

The move comes days after an expose by NTV uncovered chilling details of botched surgeries, falsified medical records, medical negligence and deep fraud at the Catholic Church-owned facility.

On Wednesday, Health Cabinet Secretary (CS)Aden Duale said the hospital risks closure should the claims be found to be true.

"In response to allegations of malpractice highlighted by the media, l have directed the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) to immediately commence in-depth investigations into the claims. The council is mandated to take the most stringent disciplinary actions available should any malpractice be confirmed," Mr Duale said in a statement to newsrooms.

"The government re-affirms it's unwavering commitment to the delivery of a high quality Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all citizens, regardless of where we they seek services. Every patient possesses a right to accessible, quality healthcare and must be fully protected from harm while seeking essential services," added CS Duale.

At the same time, the CS revealed that the government had a few months ago suspended Sisto Mazzoldi Hospital from providing services under the Social Health Authority (SHA) framework.

"Before the expose, Sisto Mazzoldi Hospital was under active investigations by the Social Health Authority for alleged submission of inaccurate claims. We had suspended the facility from providing services under SHA, until the probe is complete," further revealed Mr Duale.

The facility, according to the cabinet secretary, was also among many others which were downgraded , following a comprehensive regulatory assessment in November 2025.

Rigorous audit

The hospital was downgraded from a Level IV to a Level Three institution.

"The decision was based on a rigorous audit of the hospital's current human resource capacity, service range and infrastructural complement, ensuring that the facility is accurately categorised according to its actual ability to offer health services," explained Duale.

Duale also urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and report any service concerns or irregularities through the SHA toll-free number 147.

The NTV expose dubbed: " Wards of Evil" revealed disturbing claims of irregularities, including botched surgeries, falsified medical records and a planned cover up of death of a patient.

Two former medics came forward as whistleblowers of a syndicate that has been carrying out the ills, while silencing staff.

Sisto Mazzoldi Hospital is also alleged to be involved in secret schemes to embezzle millions of shillings through ghost patients and fictitious claims to the SHA.

Families of those involved have also come out demanding for justice for their kin who died due to the alleged medical negligence.

The Hospital is named after Sisto Mazzoldi, an influential Italian Catholic Missionary and Bishop who played a significant role in the expansion of the Catholic Church in East Africa.
