What you need to know:

  • The police said the matatu that was heading towards Nakuru collided head-on with the lorry that was heading towards Eldoret.
  • Six people who sustained serious injuries in the crash are undergoing treatment at Londiani Hospital, in the neighbouring Kericho County.

Four people died on Thursday morning in a road crash involving a PSV matatu and a lorry at Nyancha Farm area near Mau Summit on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

Six people who sustained serious injuries in the crash are undergoing treatment at Londiani Hospital, in the neighbouring Kericho County.

The incident was confirmed by Kuresoi North police boss, Judah Gathenge. According to Mr Gathenge, the accident involved a private Nissan matatu that was ferrying mourners from a burial in Kakamega.

The police said the matatu that was heading towards Nakuru collided head-on with the lorry that was heading towards Eldoret.

“The Nissan matatu was overtaking when it collided head-on with the lorry. Four passengers in the matatu died on the spot, while six others sustained injuries and were rushed to Londiani Hospital, Mr Gathenge told the Daily Nation.

Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the matatu was speeding before it collided with the lorry.

Bodies of the victims were taken to Londiani Sub-County Hospital for preservation while the wreckages of the two vehicles were towed to Mau Summit Police Station.

An eyewitness, James Ombati, told the Daily Nation that he saw the speeding matatu attempting to overtake moments before the crash.

The Thursday morning accident disrupted traffic on the busy highway for nearly one hour.

Following the accident, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr Abdi Hassan has called on motorists using the highway to observe road safety rules.

“The government is currently upgrading the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit highway to tame accidents. I urge motorists to observe traffic rules to avoid unnecessary loss of lives,” said Dr Abdi.

The Salgaa-Migaa-Sachangwan-Total-Mau Summit stretch is a known blackspot along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

Other black spots on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway are Ngata, Sobea, Jolly Farm, Mukinyai, Total and Mau Summit.

A series of accidents on the Salgaa-Migaa-Sachangwan stretch prompted the government to construct of a temporary concrete barrier.

The concrete barrier, which was erected in 2019, has seen a drastic decline in motor accidents along the Salgaa-Sachangwan stretch.
