Governor Kihika on absence: I'm on maternity leave
After a two-month absence from the public, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, 51, has revealed that she is on maternity leave.
Governor Kihika has not been seen in public since November 18 last year, with her absence generating debate on various forums including on social media.
“Following numerous calls l have received regarding my absence as the elected governor, I want to assure the people of Nakuru that I am well and currently on maternity leave,” read the statement signed by Dr Peter Ketyenya, the Nakuru County Chief of Staff.
"While thanking the people of Nakuru for their concern, l wholeheartedly assure them that service delivery in our great county is proceeding as envisaged under the able guidance of the team led by Deputy Governor David Kones.”
At the same time, Governor Kihika indicated that she will be resuming work “in the next few weeks” when her leave ends.
Ms Kihika has been away from the public eye for nearly two months. During that period, her communications team and family members have remained mum about her whereabouts.
When she was last seen on November 18, she presided over the graduation ceremony and conferment of crafts and artisan certificates to 4,146 graduates from 33 vocational training centres in Nakuru. At the time, she was accompanied by DG Kones and other county officials.
She has been conspicuously absent at several county events. Notably, she missed the marking of Nakuru City's third anniversary on December 19 at Nyayo Gardens.
On December 24, she was also absent as her husband Sam Mburu and other county leaders distributed goodies, including foodstuff, to residents ahead of Christmas.
In her absence, DG Kones has been representing the county boss at public events.
