Preacher charged with rape in Nakuru

A preacher accused of sexually assaulting a 30-year-old tuktuk driver two years ago was on Monday charged with rape in a Nakuru court.
Peter Kimondo, a preacher at Christ Impact Church in Ruiru, Kiambu County, appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Ruth Kepha.
He was charged with raping the driver on May 27, 2022 and faces a second charge of committing an indecent act on the same complainant.
Kimondo pleaded not guilty to both charges. His lawyer, Karen Esang, applied for his release on reasonable bail, arguing that he was a law-abiding citizen and entitled to bail.
She pointed out that the prosecution had more than two years to investigate the case.
“My client is a mere pastor who has been serving in the church every Sunday. He is also a man of limited means, so the court should consider his rights and grant him reasonable bond and bail terms,” Ms Esang said.

But the prosecution opposed the application, saying the case was of great public interest and that the preacher's life was in danger as some members of the public were baying for his blood. The prosecution also argued that the suspect could interfere with witnesses.
Kimondo was arrested on Sunday following a warrant issued by police on March 3. He was arrested along with another man who is believed to be his accomplice.
He allegedly lured his victim with an alcoholic drink before sexually assaulting him in a van.
The tuktuk driver claimed that he had taken the preacher to several places, including entertainment venues, before the incident.
Although the victim filed a complaint in February 2022, it remains unclear why police took so long to arrest the suspect.
