What started as an argument between a teenager and his mother in Nyakiambi area in Elburgon, Nakuru County, quickly turned violent and ended in tragedy.

The 16-year-old Form Three student at a secondary school in Molo is now in police custody after allegedly killing his mother during a dispute over the identity of his biological father.

Preliminary investigations by police reveal that the teenager was pressing his mother, a single parent, to disclose who his real father is so that he could lay claim to his inheritance.

When the mother reportedly dismissed his demands, the enraged teen attacked and killed his mother with a club. He then began digging a grave in their kitchen, presumably to secretly bury the body.

Molo Sub-County Police Commander Timon Odingo told the Daily Nation that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had arrested the suspect and launched investigations to determine the motive behind the murder, and whether the suspect had accomplices.

“The student has been arrested and is in custody as investigations begin. Police found him digging a grave in the kitchen of their homestead, where he intended to bury the body,” said Mr Odingo.

The body of the deceased was discovered on Saturday night by relatives and neighbours who had grown concerned after she was last seen on Friday morning.

Ms Monicah Wanjiku, the deceased's sister-in-law, told the Daily Nation she found it unusual when she returned home on Friday evening and saw that the house was still locked.

“On Saturday evening, more relatives arrived and we decided we could no longer stay silent. We forced the door open and were shocked to find her lifeless body on the floor,” Ms Wanjiku recounted.

She also recalled hearing the teenager and his mother arguing on Friday, noting that the boy had seemed unusually angry.

Neighbours described the incident as deeply disturbing.

“This is very shocking. We only hear of such things happening in other places, not here in Molo,” said Grace Wanjiku, a neighbour.

She recalled that on Friday evening, the family's chickens stayed outside their cages while the house remained locked, which struck them as unusual.

The suspect was eventually found hiding under the bed inside the same house. He allegedly told the neighbours and the local authorities that he only wanted to know the identity of his father so that he could inherit his property.

The body of the deceased was taken to Elburgon Level Four Hospital mortuary for an autopsy and preservation.
