Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo is grappling with fresh challenges after the National Treasury suspended the county from implementing a World Bank-supported climate programme over concerns about financial management.
In a letter dated December 15, 2025, the Treasury formally barred the Nyamira County Government from executing the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme, citing the questionable handling of approximately Sh22 million.
The suspension marks another setback for Governor Nyaribo, coming only weeks after he narrowly survived an impeachment motion in the Senate. He is also facing separate graft allegations currently under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

In the correspondence addressed to the Governor, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi said recent World Bank missions to Nyamira had uncovered significant financial management irregularities within the county.
“We refer to the Intergovernmental Participation Agreements between the Government of Kenya and Nyamira County regarding the implementation of World Bank-funded projects and programmes,” read the letter, which was copied to the Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Governors, Mary Mwiti.
According to the Treasury, the irregularities included unauthorised use of resources, unsupported expenditures and activities that were funded but never delivered.
“During recent World Bank missions to the aforementioned county, significant financial management irregularities were identified. These include unauthorised use of resources, unsupported expenditures, non-delivered activities, and other issues that raise concerns about the overall accountability and governance of project resources,” the letter stated in part.
While the findings stemmed from two specific World Bank-funded initiatives, the Second Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project and the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project, the Treasury warned that they had broader implications for the county’s overall risk environment.
The issues raised, the letter noted, called into question the accountability and governance of project resources across the county.
“In this regard, your county is hereby suspended from implementation of the FLLoCA Programme until the raised issues are cleared and communicated to the National Treasury,” the letter concluded.

Governor Nyaribo, however, dismissed claims that donor funds meant for development were misappropriated.
Speaking during the burial of his father-in-law, Samson Nyambane Omae, in Borabu Constituency on Saturday, January 24, the county boss insisted that no money had been lost and assured residents that the funding would soon be reinstated.
“Some people are claiming that money has been lost. Put aside politics. No money has been lost, not even a coin,” he said.
He added that his administration would soon clarify the matter, maintaining that the truth would ultimately come to light.
Mr Nyaribo reaffirmed his commitment to delivering development as outlined in his election manifesto, pledging that his focus remained firmly on improving the lives of Nyamira residents.
“In the next few months, we will distribute water from the boreholes to the people of Esise Ward. The Isoge health facility will be completed by December this year. The machinery already in this ward will open up all roads before moving to the next ward,” he said.
