The Ol Kalou by-election scheduled for July 16, 2026, has emerged as one of the most closely watched political contests in the Mt Kenya region.
Yet, the two key political rivals, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua , appear to be keeping a cautious distance from the front lines of the campaigns.
Instead, the two are relying on allies and proxies, closely monitoring developments from the sidelines in what has increasingly become a high-stakes political test ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a race featuring nine candidates, the contest is gradually narrowing into a duel between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Muchina Nyaga and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) aspirant Kamau Ngotho, aligned to Mr Gachagua’s political camp.

Other contenders include Wilson Kigwa (Jubilee), Rachel Wangui (People’s Democratic Party), Mathenge Mwaniki (Kenya Moja Movement), Abdifatah Hussein (Federal Party of Kenya), Timothy Kamau (People’s Renaissance Party), Stephen Wanyoike (National Liberal Party) and Edwin Muchiri (Party of National Unity).
The seat fell vacant in March 2026 following the death of MP David Kiaraho , who had won the seat in 2022 on a Jubilee ticket with 24,058 votes against Kamau Ngotho’s 19,380 on a UDA ticket.
Political analysts say the by-election has effectively become a referendum on the influence of both Kindiki and Gachagua in Mt Kenya politics.
Symbolic political battlefield
Prof Kindiki is reportedly banking on a favourable outcome to consolidate his position as President William Ruto’ s key political lieutenant in the region, while Mr Gachagua is seeking to demonstrate that he retains control of Mt Kenya’s voting bloc.
This has shifted the campaign narrative from local development issues to broader national political messaging, largely centred on “Wantam” and “Tutam” slogans, overshadowing the immediate concerns of Ol Kalou residents.
According to political analyst Mr Mulila Munywoki, the campaigns have lost focus on voters’ priorities.
“What is happening in Ol Kalou is democratic noise. The messaging is more about 2027 than the real issues affecting residents,” he said.
He added that the by-election has become a symbolic political battlefield rather than a development-focused contest.
Both Prof Kindiki and Gachagua are reportedly receiving regular briefings from their respective field teams while issuing strategic directives, without taking visible leadership roles in the campaigns.
While Prof Kindiki is said to have deployed government-aligned technocrats to spearhead development-linked campaigns, Mr Gachagua is leaning on opposition messaging critical of President Ruto’s administration.
On the ground, Prof Kindiki’s influence is being projected through Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau and former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria. On the opposing side, Gachagua’s camp is working through Nyandarua Senator John Methu and Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia.
Mr Gachagua has also been addressing rallies via phone calls on loudspeaker, while Prof Kindiki has largely maintained silence in public campaign appearances.
On Tuesday, Mr Gachagua hosted a delegation from Nyandarua County at his Wamunyoro home where the Ol Kalou race reportedly featured prominently in their discussions.
The DCP Chair of Eminent Persons, Maina Kamanda, told Inooro TV on June 11, 2026 that Mr Gachagua is expected to make a campaign appearance in Ol Kalou a few days before July 13 to conclude his political engagements.
Prof Kindiki, on the other hand, has not publicly indicated when he will join the campaign trail, although Ms Gitau has hinted at possible development project launches in the constituency.
Mr Stephen Mungai, 28, a voter in Rurii Ward, said campaigns have become heavily monetised and politically divided.
“It is raining money, promises and propaganda. But at the end of the day, it is about who delivers. Voters are already aligned along political camps,” he said.
He added that campaign resources appear unevenly distributed, with both camps engaging in aggressive mobilisation.
Ms Jennifer Muthoni, a voter in Kanjuiri, said residents are also being promised targeted benefits, including education incentives.
“We are even being promised free secondary education exclusively for Ol Kalou students depending on how we vote,” she said.
Kikuyu Council of Elders Chairman Wachira Kiago urged restraint among politicians, warning against toxic rhetoric.
“We urge leaders to promote peace even as campaigns intensify. Development should not be used as a political favour. Elderly and vulnerable groups should not be threatened with withdrawal of benefits based on voting patterns,” he said.
UDA has a team of professionals who are not engaged in direct campaigns but are involved in civic education, in addition to holding public rallies mainly convened by Woman Rep Faith Gitau.
The professionals are armed with data, history, and well-researched documents, agriculture, and information technology, a similar model adopted by UDA in Mbeere Constituency, where Leo Wamuthende defeated Mr Newton Kariuki.
They are drawn from various fields, including education, law, health, and agriculture, Information Technology, and data analysis, all working under Mr Denis Itumbi, Secretary Special Projects and Creative Economy in Dr Ruto’s administration.
UDA has retained all ten of its aspirants in the May 8 primaries, who are involved in the campaign.
It's this loyalty to the party that has seen businessman Mr George Wambugu Kanuri, who came second in the UDA nominations, rewarded with a government position.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi appointed Mr Kanuri as a director with the Unclaimed Financial Asset Authority.
Mr Kanuri garnered 3077 votes, while the winner, Muchina Nyaga 3221 votes, a difference of 144 votes.
Ms Mary Nyokabi, an aspirant who emerged fourth during the UDA primaries with 406 votes, says the party aspirants remain committed to the party due to its ideologies, not just to seek political leadership positions.
