A police officer in Siaya County is undergoing treatment at Sagam Hospital after he was allegedly attacked by his girlfriend following a disagreement on Christmas day.
According to Ugunja Sub-County Police Commander Lazarus Tarus, another officer — a corporal — who was also accosted by the same woman, was treated and discharged.
According to a police report on the incident which was seen by Nation , the officer, identified as Constable Dennis Mugo, was injured during a fight with his girlfriend.
The suspect, who is a Form Three student, is said to have attacked the officer with a broken piece of glass.
“She cut the victim on his head and upper arm. The victim screamed for help while bleeding profusely from the injury,” the report stated.
In the process, a colleague of the injured officer, identified as Corporal Solomon Kipchumba, responded to the cries for help but was also attacked by the student who cut him on his lower lip.
On Saturday, Mr Tarus, who confirmed the incident, told Nation that the suspect was immediately arrested and detained at Ugunja Police Station as Investigations into the matter started.
The Nation further established that the officer and the suspect had been living as husband and wife for some time now.
An officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media said that the suspect wanted to attend a Christmas party with some of her male friends but Mr Mugo would not allow her.
“He took away her phone and called the man who had invited the lady to the party and asked him to live his wife alone,” he said.
It was after the phone call that the woman went berserk, breaking household items before reportedly attacking the officer.
“Police officers from Ugunja Police Station rushed to the scene led by the OCS and the injured policemen were taken to Inuka Hospital for treatment,” he said.
Corporal Kipchumba was treated and discharged while his colleague was referred to Sagam Hospital for specialised care because his condition was critical.
