10 killed after fuel tanker hits two matatus on Kisumu-Kakamega road

At least 10 people were killed on Wednesday evening after a fuel tanker rammed two 14-seater matatus.

At least 10 people were killed on Wednesday evening after a fuel tanker rammed two 14-seater matatus at Iguhu, Yala Bridge, on the Kisumu-Kakamega road.

The crash, which happened around 6:30 pm, involved three vehicles - a petrol tanker and two 14-seater public service vehicles.

The fuel tanker was being driven from Kisumu towards Kakamega by a driver whose identity remains unknown.

According to witnesses, the driver of the fuel tanker hit a bump, lost control of the vehicle which veered to the right side of the road facing Kakamega direction.

It hit two vehicles – a Toyota matatu belonging to Mitrans Sacco and another Toyota matatu belonging to Transiline Sacco which was had 14 passengers on board.

The two matatus were being driven from Kakamega towards Kisumu.

The driver of the fuel tanker fled the scene of the crash and his whereabouts remains unknown.

Members of the public rushed to scene in an effort to rescue the occupants of the two matatus, but unfortunately some were already dead.

"Due to the impact, 10 people died on the spot and 20 people were injured. My team visited the scene, photographed and sketched," reads the police incident report from the Western Regional Traffic office. 

The bodies of the deceased persons were taken to Kakamega County General and Referral Hospital mortuary for identification and postmortem, while the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

The three vehicles involved in the crash were towed to Kakamega Police Station.
